Hello,

I need your expert advice please.

My Galaxy 1.9 TDi MK2 has a vibration / wobble when it's goes over 70 mph (i know this is the speed limit on a motorway but it's nice to have a little left to over take when needed)

I have had the tyers balanced at 2 garages both said they were ok and I have replaced part of the off side drive shaft as this was the only thing the garage(s) could find with any play in.

Do you have any ideas on what it could be and how to fix it?

Thank you very much for reading.

Naughty boy, stop speeding.

If as you say, all the linkage has been checked out and is fine, then switch the back wheels to the front and see what happens. If it goes, then you know it's the wheels, if it doesn't, then you start looking elsewhere. You have a wide choice of linkage, driveshaft balance, even engine mountings, or wheel bearings.

Best of luck, and keep us informed, unless you get nicked.

Hi there

Unlikely to be balancing at that speed, more likely to be one or more of the following, worn suspension bushes, ball joints, driveshaft/cv joints, wheel bearing or shock absorbers

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I don't drive over 70 unless I'm over taking then I drop back down to 65/70 mph

I've moved the wheels from front to back still the same.

How do I check the above linkage / engine mounts? I've had the drive shaft changed so that should be fine.

Thanks again

The garage did check for loose things but could only find play in the drive shaft which they replaced. When it wobbles there is no noise coming from the engine or none that I can hear anyway.. no knocking when I put full lock on eith side.

Thanks

Does the vibration alter when accelerating and/or braking?

It gets worse the faster I go and braking doesn't affect it. As soon as I drop back down to 70 it stops vibrating.

i get the same vibration when driving at these speeds (in france the limit is 90) its anoying but i put up with it as i dont need to drive that fast very often.

would like to fix it though if you find the cure.

More precisely, does the vibration change as you actually apply power or lift off the throttle? That could point towards a gearbox problem, or possibly a driveshaft... if the throttle has no effect, I would be looking more at the hub components, road wheels and suspension.

Not sure if this has already been asked, but are you feeling vibration through the steering, or is it coming through the car body? Front balance issues tends to show themselves around 60-70mph, but rear balance problems show at higher speeds - and they are normally felt through the car body.

I dont think it changes with throttle, just speed if that makes sence (I can take my foot off the throttle and the vibration stays until it drops back to 70mph)

I would say it's the car body that vibrates although the steering wheels shakes also but this could be caused my the car body shaking.

Based on this would you say it's the rear wheels out of balance?

Thank you very much for all your help so far

It's fixed, I went to kwik fit and they balanced the rear wheels and it wobble has gone. The best £11 I have spent

thank you for helping me to locate the problem.

Hopefully this will help others with the same problem.

Good to hear it's sorted! :)

Mine wobbles through the steering at high speed also - would a wisely spent £11 solve my problem too? I don't tend to notice it often, as it's only on motorways, which I don't use frequently, there not being many schools on them! :)

As ACD says, wobble through the steering around 60-70mph is very likely to be an out of balance front wheel. Any decent tyre fitting depot should be able to check your balancing, without you having to part with too much cash.

If the steering wheel wheel only wobbles under braking, then warped brake discs is favourite.
